The Butcher Creek Stabilization Project was begun after the City spent several thousands of dollars to clean and maintain the box culvert under SE 29th Street. Historically the box would fill with sediment over a period of several years due to it's location over a bend in Butcher Creek. The sediment would then need to be cleaned out with heavy equipment only to be filled with sediment again.
To address the buildup of sediment in the culvert and restore some of the vegetation along the stream bank, an innovative approach was taken. A weir wall was designed to direct low flows in the stream to the east culvert. During high flows the water will flow over the weir wall and into the pond area on the west side of the wall. The sediment in the water will drop out, accumulating in the pond area instead of in the culvert. Switchgrass and cordgrass planted in the ponding area will aide in this process by providing for increased infiltration of the ponded water and will provide an area that is more easily maintained overtime.
